Partner Hassan A. Zavareei Assists in Obtaining Landmark Jury Verdict In Favor of Tenants Evicted from Their Homes.

In April 2004, Hassan A. Zavareei, together with lawyers from the Washington Lawyers’ Committee, successfully tried a case against the District of Columbia for discriminatory housing code enforcement against Latino and other residents of the Columbia Heights and Mount Pleasant neighborhoods. The suit alleged that the District of Columbia had violated federal and state fair housing laws by putting buildings in predominantly Latino neighborhoods on a “hot properties” list and slating them for closure, and, in one instance, evicting all the tenants of one building on only a few hours notice. The jury returned a verdict of nearly $200,000 for the tenants of one of the impacted buildings.
