Tycko & Zavareei LLP is representing tenants in class action lawsuits against two large property management companies in the District of Columbia, and investigating other similar claims in DC and around the country. The lawsuits and investigations center around property management companies’ practice of overcharging tenants for utilities through their relationship with Conservice, a third-party utility billing agent.
In the two filed class actions, DC tenants allege that Bozzuto and Greystar engaged in deceptive advertising practices when withholding information about the costs of added utilities at the time they applied for housing, and violated DC law when using an illegal submetering methodology for assessing utilities, and charging them for utilities at rates in excess of permissible rates.
Tycko & Zavareei is investigating similar claims against other property management companies and in other states. Other possible legal violations may include additional excessive application fees, other improper monthly utility charges to which the tenant never agreed, and illegal eviction based on the alleged failure to pay these utility charges.
