Tycko & Zavareei LLP’s (TZ) arsenal of legal talent boasts a pedigree that is unparalleled in the plaintiffs’ bar. Our clients enjoy representation by brilliant, creative attorneys who are among the top talent in the legal field.
Our attorneys are graduates of the nation’s finest law schools, including Harvard Law School, Yale Law School, Columbia Law School, the University of Michigan Law School, Georgetown University Law Center, and UC Berkeley. Many bring experience and knowledge obtained through serving in prestigious clerkships for federal and state trial judges. Prior to joining the TZ team, our attorneys practiced law at top-tier international law firms, completed highly selective public interest fellowships, and represented the United States of America through the Department of Justice.
TZ clients know their lawyers aren’t afraid to go toe-to-toe with the well-resourced, wealthy corporate law firms representing our adversaries. In fact, we beat them all the time. At the same time, our attorneys are compassionate and caring advocates who appreciate the importance of our work for the public benefit—and our clients. That’s how our attorneys have successfully recovered hundreds of millions of dollars in recovery for consumers and whistleblowers across the country.
Jonathan Tycko and Hassan Zavareei founded Tycko & Zavareei LLP (TZ) with a mission to protect the public interest through significant, impactful litigation. Since then, TZ attorneys have pursued litigation in a wide range of subject areas to protect the public interest.
The heart of many of our class action cases is economic justice. Our firm is a leader in litigation challenging illegal and unfair fees charged by banks, credit unions, mortgage servicers, and other financial institutions—fees that disproportionately affect low-income consumers. As one example, each year, banks in the United States make billions of dollars in profits from overdraft fees, often charged on small-dollar purchases made by consumers living paycheck to paycheck. Many of these fees are unpredictable and unexpected. TZ has recovered hundreds of millions of dollars in unfair and illegal bank fees, which effectively serve as a poverty tax.
TZ is also a leader in cases challenging illegal payday lending practices. In one of the largest unlawful payday lending cases in the country, TZ helped recover a settlement fund of approximately $60 million, along with the cancellation of over $380 million in outstanding loans, from unscrupulous payday lenders who tried to evade consumer protection statutes by operating from inside Native American reservations. The judge presiding over the settlement said that the attorneys in charge of the case, including TZ, were “some of the best lawyers in America.”
TZ attorneys regularly partner with legal advocacy organizations to pursue important cases. For instance, we partnered with the Arch City Defenders to fight back against unconstitutional money bail practices in Florissant, MO, and Maplewood, MO. Further, we partnered with the Centro Legal de la Raza to combat the predatory practices of a private probation company that violated immigrants’ rights, many of whom were low income and spoke little English. We are incredibly proud of our accomplishments in these cases involving racial justice and immigrants’ rights.
Our attorneys also protect the public from consumer goods that are unsafe or sold based on false and misleading claims. We have litigated and settled numerous cases involving defective products, including headphones and microwaves. We have also litigated cases regarding dietary supplements that falsely claimed to restore users’ youth and cosmetics that secretly contained unapproved drug products. We teamed up with the District of Columbia’s Attorney General to fight back against oil companies’ false claims about their products’ harm to the environment.
We hold companies accountable for failing to safeguard consumers’ personal and private information from theft and disclosure through our growing privacy and data breach practice. Hassan Zavareei was appointed Interim Lead Counsel in In RE: Ring, LLC Privacy Litigation. This litigation involves families that purchased Ring indoor security cameras who received vicious harassment by hackers who were able to gain access to their Ring accounts. We have also served as lead counsel in cases involving data breaches and improper data collection.
Finally, our whistleblower practice plays a vital role in protecting the public and ensuring that taxpayer dollars used for government programs are not wasted in fraudulent transactions. Without courageous whistleblowers willing to take a stand against fraud, many corrupt and deceitful practices would continue unchecked. Our brave whistleblower clients have exposed customs fraud, healthcare fraud, and other improper and illegal conduct in government contracts and private insurance transactions. We represented a whistleblower who exposed her former employer’s practice of paying illegal kickbacks to referring physicians.
We look forward to hearing from you.
