Moler, et al. v. University of Maryland Medical System, et al., Case No.: 1:21-cv-01824-JRR in the United States District Court for the District of Maryland
On May 23, 2024, Judge Julie R. Rubin of the United States District Court for the District of Maryland approved a $3.25 million settlement in the class action lawsuit, Moler v. University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS). The lawsuit alleged that UMMS and its Employee Benefits Committee violated the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA) through the mismanagement and administration of several retirement plans. This settlement represents a significant recovery for participants and beneficiaries of these UMMS retirement plans, impacting those with account balances during the class period from July 1, 2015, to December 31, 2023.
The settlement marks a substantial achievement for the plaintiffs, offering significant compensation and addressing the alleged mismanagement of their retirement plans. Judge Rubin declared the settlement fair, reasonable, and adequate, and acknowledged the exemplary work of Class Counsel from Edelson Lechtzin LLP, McKay Law, LLC, and Tycko & Zavareei LLP. Additionally, the court approved the requested 33% in attorneys’ fees, costs, and service awards, further underlining the successful resolution of this class action suit. This outcome provides critical redress to affected participants and beneficiaries, ensuring their grievances over retirement plan management have been adequately addressed.
