Outcome: $37,500,000 Settlement
Lundy et al. v. Meta Platforms, Inc., Case No.: 3:18-CV-06793-JD in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California
Judge James Donato of the Northern District of California has granted final approval of a settlement in the case against Meta Platforms, Inc. (formerly Facebook). The settlement addresses claims that Meta unlawfully collected and inferred precise location information, despite users expressly letting Facebook know they did not want to be tracked by disabling Location Services on their mobile devices. Additionally, this practice goes against the terms of service that assured users their data would not be collected without consent.
This settlement is an incredible result for the class and comes after four years of contentious litigation and exhaustive discovery and provides a common fund of $37,500,000. The five settlement class representatives will each receive $2,000 service awards. This substantial amount will provide meaningful relief to the class members affected by Meta’s location tracking practices. Furthermore, it aims to raise awareness among users about the data collection practices of Meta.
